Before any of the chemical transformations of the transition phase
can occur, pyruvate needs to get through the outer and inner membranes
of the mitochondria in order to get to the matrix area. Pyruvate
can't cross these membranes on its own. It needs the help of a carrier
protein. The carrier protein transports the pyruvate safely through
the membranes and drops it off in the matrix.
