Up to this point, we have been talking about the metabolic pathways that breakdown glucose for energy. If you take a quick look at the concept map, you will notice that there are other pathways that breakdown lipids and proteins. These pathways involve different molecules and different intermediate steps, but they all end up being transformed into acetyl CoA.
