I have been a Consultant adult Cardiac Surgeon in Leeds since 2001. We are teaching surgical skills in the wrong way -have you noticed that many wetlabs and simulations have candidates sitting down at fixed tables with the specimens at table height so that stitching has the wrist and elbow on the same level? This is akin to learning to playing golf sitting down!
My ‘out of the box thinking’ resulted in me in putting the heart in the box for the critically acclaimed cardiac courses PAR Excellence and PAR Aorta. Deliberate practice can be done at home at home on low fidelity models. My learning in martial arts has led me to develop the Black Belt Academy off Surgical Skills.
Developing teaching skills in others
1) Director of the Faculty of Surgical Trainers the RCSEd 2019. My remit is to professionalise surgical trainers. I was appointed deputy in 2016. I have helped ASiT with recommendations for the ‘Cut it Out’ campaign’. I have established the FST Medal for Distinguished Services to Surgical Training
2) Silver Scalpel Award since 1999- This award has national recognition for the identification of the Best Surgical Trainer.
3) Regional Surgical Advisor since 2012-2019
