Step 1: The first step in glycolysis involves the addition of a phosphate group to the glucose to form glucose-6-phosphate. This type of reaction is described as a phosphorylization. The enzyme that catalyzes this reaction is called hexokinase. The molecule is called 6-phosphate because the phosphate is bonded to the 6th carbon.
