Geometry Completed Timelines

Hello and happy summertime!
If you are looking at this page before you are headed to Geometry, feel free to check out last year's pages to see some of what is in store. Please note that the textbook for 2013-2014 is different from the text used in 2012-2013, so the solutions will not match.
If you or your parents are wondering what you need to remember from math in order to be successful in Geometry as a sophomore, here is a short list of things that you should be very good at before you step into the Geometry classroom: (these are in no particular order, by the way)

  • solving all types of linear equations
  • finding the slope of a line on a coordinate plane
  • working with fractions
  • adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing all types of numbers
  • working with radicals (square roots)
  • explaining what you do and why you do it when you solve an equation or write an equation to answer a question

One of the resources that I encourage you to use, especially if you had some struggles in Algebra last year, is Khan Academy (Algebra section). Work on skills that you already feel comfortable with, and keep trying on the ones you struggled with last year. The best preparation for the coming year is to be sure of what you were doing last year.

As we dig deep into Geometry, from day one (!), we will be learning many new terms. It is recommended that you make flashcards so that you can readily memorize the spelling, the meaning and the graphical representation of each new term. Yes, spelling will count!

If you are already starting to shop for school supplies, then you may safely invest in colored pencils or crayons, as well as thin-line markers or heavier-line pens, because we will utilize colors even more often in our diagrams than you may have heard from your classmates ahead of you.

7/25/2013: I just found this listing of summer math review topics, from Grade 6 through Calculus, listed on Khan Academy. Enjoy!

8/7/2013: A little bit of Geometry fun: Geometry State of Mind (Official Video).

8/20/2013: Please note that you will need your notebook in class on Thursday, 8/22, in order to complete the in-class activity. Be sure that you have your materials with you so that you can complete the activity - we are laying the foundation for the course immediately.

8/21/2013 (@ 2nd period): Course supplies list is found on the Course Expectations (linked below). Be ready for tomorrow.

8/21/2013 (1:10pm): Very nice work on the reflections in response to the episode of The Wonder Years we watched in class today! It seems to me that the vast majority of you are determined to put forth your best efforts this year in Geometry to ensure that you will earn the grades you are out to earn. Any grades of 9/10 are because the question asked was not answered. This typically was on the second question, "where was Kevin looking for approval?" All-in-all, good work. Now, the mission is to keep the "A" you have earned as of today.

8/28/2013: It seems to me that a number of students were studying a set of Course Expectations other than my own. All students must complete corrections of all the questions that they missed on yesterday's quiz, so that you can be sure you have the correct information going forward in this course. For each number, except #1, that you missed, write out the sentence in the course expectations that shows the correct response. These will be done on looseleaf paper, and will be turned in on or before Tuesday, September 3.

8/29/2013 (9:04am): Tonight's homework will be changed from what is currently posted. Please be aware.

9/22/2013: I have posted more helpful worked examples of finding surface area and volume of our 3-dimensional figures. Make sure you are ready to go for class tomorrow!

10/31/2013: Tomorrow is All Saints Day - a Holy Day of Obligation. Join the Saint Viator High School faith community in prayer at one of two Masses offered on Friday - before school at 7:30 am and after school at 3:05 pm - in Alumni Memorial Chapel on the 2nd floor. See you there!

10/29/2013: This will be announced in class tomorrow, Oct. 30, but to give you the heads up right away, our test on Sections 2.6 through 2.8 is scheduled for Wednesday, November 6. A Practice Test: Sections 2-6 to 2-8 has been published, but will not be copied for you. You may begin working on the Practice if you have not already done so.

10/24/2013 (4:03 pm): I have posted (but not published) the ratings for any student whose work on Khan Academy has appeared as of this minute. The scoring is 3 points per topic, with 1 point above that for completion. If you have 10 points, then you are done. If you have 6 points, that means you are finished with 2 sections but still have one more to go. If you have no points, that means you have some serious work to do tonight. Remember, as posted, NO EXCEPTIONS to the deadline of 5pm Friday 10/25. See you in class tomorrow.

10/21/2013: Already nervous for the next test? Ready to begin reviewing? Want to see what you already know? Then look no farther than the Practice Test: Sections 2-6 to 2-8! Enjoy, begin, ask questions in Math Lab...just know that you will not receive this packet as a copied packet in class - if you want it, you print it. See you in class tomorrow...we're almost to the "Packet to Dwarf All Packets"!

12/4/2013: Proofs Review Packet ***typo: #3 - segment RS is congruent to segment ST, not to segment RT ****

11/30/2013: Bonus Opportunity: Answer the following question, with full explanation as a teacher would in class, either in writing on paper or with an Educreations presentation e-mailed to instructor. Expires at 5pm on Friday, December 6.

11/14/2013: I have said that I will schedule the next test with you tomorrow, for some time next week, and I shall - the test will be held on Thursday, November 21. Here is the Chapter 3 Practice Test for you to check out and begin to work on. Have fun with it! I will take questions in class on Tuesday, November 19, and a key will be in the Math Lab from Friday, November 15.

3/11/2014: This is the first question on your test for Thursday. Love it, learn it, live it.

3/8/2014:As announced in class the test scheduled for Thursday, 3/13 will cover sections 8.1 through 8.3. Be prepared. Practice Test

2/20/2014: Chapter 7 Test has been scheduled for Tuesday, 2/25. Hard-copy review will be distributed in class on Friday, 2/21. Book test/multiple choice.

1/23/2014: Chapter 6 Test will be given on Wednesday, February 5. Chapter 6 Practice Test is published here and below. There will be a proofs section of this test given on another day, as yet unscheduled.

1/7/2014 (10:37 am): As of this moment in time, I have replied to every student who e-mailed me their Semester 1 Exam Review completed, and cc'd their parent on the message from a Viator e-mail. If you did not receive the key, that means that your parent was not clearly cc'd on the message. Please re-send the message in order to receive the key. See you in school tomorrow!

1/6/2014: Please note that the closing of school on Monday 1/6 and Tuesday 1/7 does NOT change the deadlines published for exam review packets being completed. Be aware of your deadlines and be sure to meet them.

1/3/2014: Did you make New Year's resolutions? A writer composed a list of resolutions for Catholics based on the teachings of Pope Francis in the past months. Do any of these resonate with you? New Year's resolutions: The Pope Francis list.

1/2/2014: Practice Test: Chapter 5 is published, to help you prepare for the Chapter 5 Test, scheduled for Friday, January 10. Note that the questions involve the ideas that we have learned in Chapter 5, but ask you also to incorporate past knowledge as well - this is continuing to be the case for further assessments. Keep your eyes open and your thinking caps on!

Check your solutions to #1-3, and continue with WS 7-4 in groups, being sure you are getting the correct answers - they are posted below the WS on the main course materials page. So, that means answers count for 1%, but setups and work for 99% of your grade. There will be a 20-point open-worksheet quiz on Friday to check on Worksheets 7-3 and 7-4.
Keep in mind that there are multiple algebraically equivalent set-ups, but there is only 1 correct solution!
Check your answers on WS 7-3 (posted below WS 7-3) and make corrections so that they stand out - either with red "ink" or highlight them with a specific color (give a key at the top).
