Journal - Month Prompt: January #9 - Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was born on January 15, 1929. He was a civil rights leader, minister, and an author. He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. In 1955-56 he led a boycott of Montgomery, Alabama’s segregated buses; within a year the buses were integrated. In 1957, he organized the Southern Christian Leadership Conference to promote civil rights. He made numerous speeches throughout his lifetime, including his famous “I Have a Dream” speech. He was assassinated in Memphis April 4, 1968. He was only 39 years old. We honor his birthday as a national holiday on the third Monday of January each year.
Dr. King worked for peace through nonviolent means. What are your views on violence? Do you think violence is always wrong? Or do you think there are times when violence is necessary or right? Be specific. 2 paragraphs = 10 sentences

• On February 25, 1964, 22-year-old Cassius Clay shocks the odds-makers by dethroning world heavyweight boxing champ Sonny Liston in a seventh-round technical knockout. Liston, who had twice demolished former champ Floyd Patterson in one round, was an 8-to-1 favorite. However, Clay predicted victory, boasting that he would "float like a butterfly, sting like a bee" and knock out Liston in the eighth round. A crowd of 8,300 spectators gathered at the Convention Hall arena in Miami Beach to see if Cassius Clay, who was nicknamed the "Louisville Lip," could put his money where his mouth was. The underdog proved no bragging fraud, and he danced and backpedaled away from Liston's powerful swings while delivering quick and punishing jabs to Liston's head. That night, Clay met with his friend Malcolm X, leader of the African American Muslim group known as Nation of Islam at a party. Two days later, he joined the Nation of Islam. Later that year, Clay, who was the descendant of a runaway Kentucky slave, rejected the name originally given to his family by a slave owner and took the Muslim name of Muhammad Ali. Ali would go on to become one of the greatest sports figures in the 20th century.

• May 31st, 1819 is the birthday of poet Walt Whitman, born in West Hills, Long Island, and raised in Brooklyn. He worked as a teacher, journalist, editor, carpenter, printer, and other various jobs to support his writing. In 1855, he self-published a slim volume of poems called Leaves of Grass, which carried his picture but not his name. With this book, Whitman hoped to become a truly American poet. In 1862, Whitman's brother was wounded at Fredericksburg, and Whitman went to care for him. He spent the rest of the war comforting both Union and Confederate soldiers. His poem "Oh Captain, My Captain," mourned Lincoln's assassination. Whitman worked for several government departments after the war until he suffered a stroke in 1873. He died in 1892, spending the last days of his life continuing to revise Leaves of Grass. Whitman is an example of a writer that knows a work is never complete; it can always be improved.
• How do you feel about writing? Do you think your drafts are perfect, or that they could always be improved? Are you reluctant to edit your own work? Why or why not? Can you think of a poem, an essay, or a story you have written in the past that you would not want to change? Why? One that you would like to improve? Why? (1 paragraph = 5 sentences)

Journal - M#3 - As a teacher, your one true goal is to educate your students – ALL of them. However, you must make many decisions to further that goal, such as how to structure lessons, organize class time, class rules, discipline policy, homework policy, late work policy, frequency and types of tests, etc. You are rarely provided with any of this information, or the financial funds to even buy supplies. In addition, you are often faced with disruptive influences: students who do not follow the rules, meetings, appointments, changes in curriculum, etc. Nevertheless, you MUST maintain your one true goal.
If YOU were a science teacher, what would YOUR class be like? How would you structure your lessons? How would you organize or allocate an hour and 40 minutes of class time? What class rules would you insist on? What discipline policy would you develop? Would you assign homework, why or why not? What would be your late work policy? How often would you give tests? How would YOU deal with the many disruptive influences coming at you on a daily basis? (Please answer EACH question completely (min 16 sentences) = 8 pts). REMEMBER: YOU ARE THE TEACHER AND YOUR ONE TRUE GOAL IS TO EDUCATE YOUR STUDENTS TO THE BEST OF YOUR ABILITY.

French writer Honore de Balzac's play Les Ressources de Quinola opens to an empty house thanks to a failed publicity stunt on March 19 in 1842. Hoping to create a buzz for the play, the writer circulated a rumor that tickets were sold out. Unfortunately, most of his fans stayed home. Balzac started writing plays at the age of 20 while working as a lawyer's apprentice. His plays bombed, and he took to writing thrillers under an assumed name. Needing money, he launched disastrous ventures in printing and silver mining and went bankrupt. While struggling under his debts, he resumed writing, and by 1829 he was publishing under his own name, convinced he was a genius. By 1830, he had become a celebrated writer. Balzac drove himself ruthlessly, working 14 to 16 hours at a stretch, aided by some 50 cups of coffee a day. He completed 90 novels, all part of a single series, "La Comedie Humaine," and died in Paris in 1850.
Can you think of any recent publicity stunts (by celebrities, companies selling a product, etc.) that either went very well or turned out very badly? Describe. If not, create a publicity stunt for your favorite writer, actor, sports figure, comedian, or product. How would you get loads of people to either purchase tickets to a show or event or buy the product? Explain. (2 paragraphs = 10 sentences minimum)

In a long-anticipated challenge to Web sites like the popular video-sharing site YouTube, two entertainment giants--News Corporation and NBC Universal--announce a high-stakes Internet venture on March 22, 2007. The result of the deal was the online video site Hulu (www.hulu.com), launched to a selected group of users in the fall of 2007 and to the general public in the spring of 2008. It was an effort to try to control the content of their programs (rather than file lawsuits), which were being uploaded on YouTube. Viacom, however, chose to deal with YouTube copyright infringement of their videos (which includes clips from Comedy Central, MTV, VH1, and other cable channels) by launching a $1 billion lawsuit against YouTube/Google (Google purchased YouTube in 2006). YouTube/Google won the suit in 2010 because they quickly removed the content (over 100,000 videos) in question, complying with the request for removal. Viacom disagreed and believed that if the law is broken in the first place, the offender should have to suffer consequences.
What do you think? Should those who break the law in copyright infringement be exonerated if they take the content down? What if the content has already been copied and distributed by millions of people? Or do you agree with the verdict and think compliance is enough? How often do you view content on YouTube? Hulu? Do you ever wonder if the videos on YouTube are infringing on copyrights? (2 paragraphs = 10 sentences minimum)

She also sang just a little behind the beat, creating a singing style all her own.

These are the folks who remind us to think outside the box, to be a little more true to ourselves. Today's the day to thank them. So give them a hug, and say ‘I love you, you weirdo!’” After being asked how she compares to Lady Gaga, rapper Nicki Minaj said in a BBook.com interview February 23, 2011, “We both do the awkward, non-pretty thing. What we’re saying – what I’m saying, anyway - is that it’s okay to be weird. And maybe your weird is my normal. Who’s to say? I think it’s an attitude we both share.”
